Self-value is an important virtueThe value of a diamond is not determined by what people use it for but by what it is made up of. Whatever you use a diamond for will not affect its value. You can drop a diamond in mud but it will still be a diamond. A diamond carries its own value and doesn’t allow other people or situations to determine it. A wise person knows how best to use a diamond in hand but a fool may decide to use it for anything, even dropping it in a gutter, and still it will not cease to be a diamond. Read more
Growing older is mandatory, Growing up is optionalThe first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze. Read more
Failure is not to be fearedDrip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip… The incessant dripping of water on the stone below ultimately carves a hole in the hardened object, just as a sculptor would carve a beautiful statue from an inanimate piece of rock. Perhaps he just wanted to encourage youTwo men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. Read more
The Attitude of the FlowerChange happens. Life goes on. That thought came to me just the other day when I set out to gather all of the leaves that had fallen thus far on our property. Fall is an incredible time of change. In death we find beauty. The dying leaves turn into wondrous colors that paint the world around us. In their death we marvel at the glorious picture they create if only for a short time. But what of the flowers? Read more
